Good morning, everyone! I’ve been pretty low keyed these days, working on my new book, a time travel historical fiction set in ancient Mesoamerica. Most days I feel blessed to be writing this amazing story of the Olmec Indians, I enjoy the process, but there are many hours that are, no other word for it — grueling — nevertheless, I am hooked! To keep a balance in my life and not spend everyday home writing and being with my dogs (my favorite thing to do), once a week I force myself to get out and find something else I might enjoy doing. And those things are usually events and places where I am surrounded by the Mexican people enjoying what they enjoy most. Last Sunday I went to a rodeo and watched Mexican cowboys rope beautiful wild horses although one cowboy attempting to ride a bull, was not very successful. It was hilarious, the gigantic creature would not come out of the gate, it laid down and that was that. Well, the bull thought that was that, but a few men pulled him out of the pen, the animal got up, the cowboy got on, the bull bucked him off and ran out of the rink to somewhere in the back to hide. The crowd of course cheered for the bull, and a good time was had by all, even the bull, it was fabulous. Sunday’s rodeo event was a fundraiser for a “horse therapy” group that helps Mexican children with disabilities. I am hoping next month to begin helping out at their ranch along with a Canadian friend of mine who began volunteering this past Spring. I’ll just be assisting with the care of the horses and since I’ve realized I can’t ride any more, my ass is too old, I’ll be able to get my fill of the beautiful critters by brushing them, loving them and even shoveling their poo. Our Miss Pearl who turns fifteen next week is still alive and kicking! She has good days, not so good days but all in all she is happy to still be with us and enjoy her little pack of dogs. She eats like a pig, takes at least one walk a day with all of us and fortunately for me, sleeps throughout the night. Her life has been good here in San Miguel and watching her relationships with other dogs blossom, has been wonderful for me. Our rainy season is about over, it wasn’t great but also wasn’t terrible like last year’s. We got just enough rain; the reservoir is in okay shape and the farmers seem to be happy. Today is cold, in fact, I’m in bed writing this letter with my heating blanket turned up high. Tomorrow though, is predicted to be sunny and warm, you just never know this time of year — yesterday felt like a blustery New England Fall day and I loved it! I’ll be back to the island and possibly my hometown in Alabama for a visit, just don’t know when. I cannot leave our Miss Pearl, she is much too fragile to be without me and I would never dessert by wing-girl, every second with her is precious. I miss all of you. Love, Lorraine |
